Persistent organic pollutants, such as veterinary and human pharmaceuticals, pesticides and industrial chemicals, typically accumulate in aquatic environments. Conventional water treatment processes are hardly able to remove them completely and without residues. With this in mind, Fraunhofer IKTS, together with partners in the joint project "MemPhOx", developed functionally hybrid filtration-photocatalysis-material compound systems that can be combined into stacks. Ceramic microfiltration membranes in planar or tubular design, cellular ceramic structures coated with highly effective photocatalytic titanium dioxide and energy-efficient, durable and environmentally friendly UV LEDs to stimulate the catalytic reaction were combined to form stacks and integrated into continuously operated treatment plants.
