Euro Powder Metallurgy 2024 Congress & Exhibition

The Euro PM Congress & Exhibition is the foremost event for the international powder metallurgy community, and provides the focal point for Industry personnel, researchers, and suppliers to meet, network and develop their business. The Euro PM2024 Congress programme includes over 250 technical papers presented in oral and poster sessions, including as well as eleven in-depth Special Interest Seminars. Running in parallel to the technical sessions, the Euro PM2024 Exhibition is one of the largest dedicated powder metallurgy industry exhibitions in 2024.

3D printed hard metal components

By an increasingly sophisticated tool design the productivity of tools can be further improved and optimized. In traditional tool manufacturing, complex geometries, such as helical or meandering cooling channels inside the component or surfaces with undercuts, are still implemented at high costs or not realizable at all.

A process developed at Fraunhofer IKTS allows the 3D printing of complex hardmetal tools. The achieved components show a typical hardmetal structure comprising a density of one hundred percent and a homogeneous binder distribution. Comparing the materials characteristics, there are no differences between the 3D printed and conventionally produced high-performance hardmetal tools.

Shaping

Fraunhofer IKTS develops innovative production methods for products made of advanced ceramics with emphasis on integration of function, quality control and cost savings. The manufacturing concepts draw on the diverse possibilities of shaping. In the field of thermoplastic shape-forming (powder injection molding, low pressure injection molding as well as vacuum casting using rapid prototyping process chains) Fraunhofer IKTS invested in a two-component injection molding machine as well as in the preparation and characterization of feedstocks. Apart from extruding multi-channel elements and honeycomb structures, alternative tape casting techniques based on continuous processes (multilayer tape casting, structuring and laminating) are developed to realize new filtration concepts. Furthermore, these techniques are transferred into solutions which are suitable for series production. In the field of processing suspensions innovative methods like electrophoresis, gel casting and freeze casting are developed.

Additive Manufacturing

By adapting additive manufacturing processes for ceramic materials (CerAM), ceramic components can be complexly shaped, further functionalized and miniaturized – as is common for other classes of materials. As a result, highly complex ceramic components can be produced economically, with post-processing reduced or even eliminated. Additively manufactured ceramics are now, for the first time, a real alternative to components made of polymers and metals, especially for applications in harsh environments.

In addition to ceramics, Fraunhofer IKTS also processes other materials with the same process chain, e.g. hardmetals and cermets, powder metals, glasses as well as composites from different material classes.
