As part of the IPUCLEAN joint research project, Fraunhofer IKTS has designed an innovative filing instrument that facilitates the dentist's work during root canal treatment and shortens treatment time. For this purpose, a tiny piezoceramic stack actuator was developed, which superimposes an axially oscillating movement in the ultrasonic frequency range on the rotation of the file. This makes it possible to avoid the time-consuming cleaning step previously required to prevent file breakage.
In the Hybrid-Bone project, customizable and thus precisely fitting, mechanically stable bone replacement materials are being developed. The hybrid bone consists of additively manufactured, load-bearing support struts filled with porous foam. The foam structure serves as a biodegradable guide structure for the ingrowth of cells. This means that the foam can be degraded by the body and at the same time cause new bone to form in the same place.
The rapid development of innovative implant materials adapted to patient needs requires reliable standardized test procedures and testing systems. This is the only way to preventively assess material safety and functionality. Conventionally, test specimens are placed in cell culture plates and biological material is applied, which can lead to various errors in comparative quantification.
The ClicKit-Well improves the reliability of biological in vitro assays. It allows quantitative comparisons between test specimens by generating standardized surfaces on the material under test, eliminating the influence of different material dimensions.
An electrode platform fabricated by inkjet printing on polymer film enables optical and electrophysiological monitoring of autonomously contracting cardiac cells. Thus, stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes can be monitored multifactorially, which in turn provide new insights for drug development, toxicological studies and biosensor development.
Ultrasound imaging is a central component of medical diagnostics. The desire for more precise imaging requires higher image resolutions, which can only be achieved by using high-frequency ultrasound transducers with operating frequencies between 20 and 40 MHz.
1-3 piezocomposites have become established for the manufacture of ultrasound transducers for medical imaging. To increase the working frequency, the composite thickness, i.e. the height of the piezoelectric rods, has to be reduced. The soft-mold process developed at Fraunhofer IKTS enables significantly finer-scale 1-3 piezocomposites to be produced by means of cast molding. Round rods in a hexagonal arrangement currently enable the construction of transducers with operating frequencies of up to 30 MHz – compared to 15 to 20 MHz that can be realized using conventional methods.
