ceramitec is the central event at which the entire ceramics industry – from manufacturers through to science – comes together. Over the course of four days, over 600 exhibitors from all over the world present their entire portfolios at the ceramics trade fair: machinery, devices, systems, processes, and raw materials. Fraunhofer IKTS will be there as a competent partner along the entire ceramic value chain for individualized, functionalized components and novel ceramic materials. The range is supplemented by diagnostic know-how that helps to ensure quality and optimize industrial processes in terms of their energy efficiency.

Transparent ceramics

Optical technologies are drivers of innovation and growth. For years, Fraunhofer IKTS has been a world leader in the production of transparent ceramics with a particularly fine crystalline structure and extremely good mechanical properties. This gives them significant application advantages over glass, especially in harsh environments (e.g. temperature loads and gradients).

At Fraunhofer IKTS, the research and development of high-purity transparent ceramics for optical systems, medical technology and ballistic protection is being steadily expanded. A technical infrastructure is currently being integrated on the basis of PERLUCOR®, which cover the complete value chain for transparent parts and components. The new research and development center will help to significantly expand the current application scenarios of transparent ceramics with mature technologies:

Optics and sensor technology: Chemically and mechanically stable optics for sensor systems (driving assistance and transport systems, lidar sensors for autonomous driving), active light diffraction and guidance, laser head protection systems, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems
Civil security: chemical and mechanical protective covers for optical systems in harsh conditions (desert regions, subsea sensor technology, radiation-resistant lidar sensors on satellites, night vision devices, solar energy harvesting), ballistic protective windows and optics for vehicles, large-format scanner screens
Medical technology and biotechnology: Biocompatible and biostable optics for endoscopes in human and veterinary diagnostics
Consumer industries, IoT components: Scratch-resistant displays and interactive buttons for vehicles and mobile devices

Zirconium carbide as an alternative to tungsten and molybdenum

Ever higher demands are being placed on the purity of process atmospheres and corrosive thermal and chemical stability for high-temperature processes in the semiconductor industry, micro- and nanoelectronics, photovoltaics, optics and materials production. Currently, tungsten and molybdenum are frequently used materials for these applications. Due to the limited availability and high prices of these refractory metals, alternative materials such as zirconium carbide (ZrC) are attractive for innovative solutions in plant engineering.

Zirconium carbide belongs to the group of metal-like ceramics. As is the case with very few materials, the vapor pressure is extremely low even at high temperatures of over 2000 °C. The high melting point (Ts > 3500 °C) enables use up to the highest temperatures. Zirconium carbide exhibits outstanding corrosion stability under non-oxidizing atmospheres. It is therefore ideally suited for high-temperature applications and its properties are at least equivalent to those of refractory metals used to date.

In addition to its outstanding material properties, zirconium carbide is also lighter, less expensive and contains no critical raw materials. Nevertheless, it has not yet been used because the production of large-format and dense ZrC materials has not yet been technically possible. However, with a reliable and cost-effective manufacturing technology, this material would be an attractive alternative to many refractory metals. Considering this background, a process was developed by which dense ZrC materials in different geometries can be produced cost-effectively by means of pressureless sintering.

Functionalization of additively manufactured ceramic components using thick-film technologies

Harsh environmental conditions with high thermal, chemical and/or mechanical loads are a particular challenge in almost all areas of industry. Here, for example, highly integrated sensor systems with metallic or polymer components reach their limits and make real-time data acquisition difficult.

Functionalized 3D ceramic components, on the other hand, meet the requirements in terms of robustness, miniaturization and reliability. Thanks to the targeted selection of materials and combination of additive manufacturing and thick-film technology, they combine advantages such as chemical and thermal resistance, high hardness, low density or certain biological properties with complex geometries such as different wall thicknesses or concealed heating and cooling channels.

Materials and process analysis

We provide users and manufacturers of materials and components with a comprehensive portfolio of methods for testing, characterization, and analytical methods for material properties and production processes. The focus here is on ceramic materials, components, and processes for technical applications, including lightweight construction as well as materials for microelectronics, nanoelectronics, photonics and biomedicine.

Fraunhofer IKTS sees itself as first contact for any issues that involve chemical, thermal, microstructural, mechanical, tribological, electrical and electrochemical analysis, assessment and optimization of materials and components, as well as the manufacturing processes involved. Aside from all of the necessary standard analytical methods, the institute also has the world‘s most exceptional tools at its disposal – especially to identify, define and quantify the properties at extreme temperatures.

With our vast reservoir of expertise in processes, materials and analysis, we consults with and assists clients with the development of new materials and products, clarification of complex failure mechanisms and achievement of legal and quality standards. With accredited laboratories for determining characteristic values for powders, suspensions, thermophysical and electrical/dielectrical materials, electrical components and component systems, the institute is in a position to perform a variety of quality assurance and certification tasks commissioned by the customer – from products and processes to the study and analysis of prototypes.

BioRiff: Protecting aquatic biodiversity through 3D-printed reef structures made from natural mineral raw materials

The health of the oceans as an important part of the global ecosystem is of great social relevance (Global Goal 14: Life Below Water). To preserve the aquatic ecosystem, BioRiff brings together stakeholders from industry, science and public authorities with the aim of developing ecosystem-compatible reefs and applying them in practice. With the help of innovative processes, damaged ecosystems in harbors and on the coast are to be given a new lease of life, thereby contributing to natural climate protection.

Fraunhofer IKTS is further developing ceramic additive manufacturing processes to print bioactive surfaces from natural materials. The complex-shaped components are modified in terms of composition and surface structure. This promotes rapid system integration, enables the colonization of native fish and reduces approval hurdles for the deployment of artificial reefs. Especially in fragile ecosystems, the use of natural materials is of great benefit for the successful colonization of artificial reef structures and ensures the survival of the existing organisms.

Fraunhofer IKTS is involved in the Smart Ocean Technologies research group based in Rostock, where it has unique facilities for deploying structures in the largest artificial Baltic Sea reef, Nienhagen Reef, over an area of approx. 50,000 m² using a monopile. Both structures standing on the bottom and those attached at various water depths can be tested under real conditions in the Baltic Sea and in the city harbor of Elmshorn.
