Power electronic devices are often used in industrial drives, power grids and electric vehicles under harsh environmental conditions. Corrosion protection of all active components is therefore necessary to ensure a long service life and reliability. Fraunhofer IKTS is researching electrochemical impedance spectroscopy as a suitable analysis method. This offers a promising approach for characterizing the state of health of the encapsulation material.
To withstand demanding thermal cycles in power electronics, the materials used must be extremely strong. Silicon nitride (Si3N4) is the most suitable material according to the current state of the art. Fraunhofer IKTS is therefore working with European partners to evaluate all stages of the value chain from the powder to the finished AMB (Active Metal Bonding) substrate.
The range of applications for power electronic modules will continue to grow significantly in the coming years. This development is driven by the high demand in e-mobility and renewable energies. At the same time, the requirements for electrical insulation strength, mechanical stability and heat dissipation of ceramic circuit carriers in power electronic modules are increasing. Application-specific measuring methods are refined at Fraunhofer IKTS to characterize the different assembly stages and components.
Fraunhofer IKTS develops functional ceramic materials for use in harsh environments. These materials can be processed to customer specifications using a wide variety of synthesis, assembly, joining, layer deposition and structuring methods and applied in complex microsystems. In addition, special measuring methods are offered to characterize the reliability of the materials and products.
Active metal brazes are available to manufacture metal-ceramic and ceramic-ceramic composites. Those brazes enable the critical wetting under inert or vacuum atmospheres. Moreover, reactive air brazes, which contain active components, are attractive alternatives because the brazing process can be performed under air. Fraunhofer IKTS develops reactive braze pastes, characterizes metallic active brazes and adapts joining processes.
