Client-specific design and construction of piezocomposite ultrasonic transducers

Fraunhofer IKTS covers the complete process chain of manufacturing customized ultrasonic probes. As a developer of specialized probes for new materials, the institute supplies application-specific, customized phased-array and single element probes for 3D component testing, as well as ultrasonic probes for material characterization.

These are based on 1-3-piezocomposite transducers manufactured with dice-and-fill technology. They consist of PZT ceramics and adapted acoustic stacks. The design and acoustic matching of the composite’s properties can be calculated beforehand. To do this, the researchers use 1D simulations of the probe’s structure, as well as complex 2D and 3D simulations in order to optimize the design.
