Fiber coating by CVD and ALD

Fiber-reinforced composites are used in many areas of industry because of their diverse properties and varied design possibilities. The fibers perform different functions depending on the application. Defined fiber coatings open up a wide range of possibilities for adjusting properties, and therefore functions. At Fraunhofer IKTS, different coatings and coating systems can be deposited by use of Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) or Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD). Thereby, the used deposition process and the desired layer thickness can be optimally adjusted to the requirements of the fiber materials.

Coating of battery powders using the ALD process

Currently, lithium-ion batteries are used in the vast majority of electric vehicles, but their lifespan is limited due to aging processes (degradation). Additionally, critical cobalt-containing active materials are often used. Improved and cobalt-free active materials can enhance the lifespan and sustainability of the batteries.

Novel functional coatings for battery powders developed at Fraunhofer IKTS, which are deposited using ALD, prevent interactions with the electrolyte and thus the degradation of the cells. For this development, the research team was honored as the Innovation Project of the Year 2025 in the Industrial Collective Research funding program.
