The Euro PM Congress & Exhibition is the foremost event for the international powder metallurgy community, and provides the focal point for Industry personnel, researchers, and suppliers to meet, network and develop their business. Running in parallel to the technical sessions, the Euro PM2025 Exhibition is one of the largest dedicated powder metallurgy industry exhibitions in 2025.

As Europe's largest research institute for ceramics, hard materials, and cermets, Fraunhofer IKTS demonstrates how materials, components, and processes can be developed in a targeted manner based on a wide range of characterization methods, thermodynamic and kinetic modeling, and extensive furnace technology from laboratory to pilot scale.

Forming

High-performance tools and wear parts are a combination of high-performance materials and an optimal, often very complex shape. Fraunhofer IKTS not only deals with wear-resistant materials, but also with their shaping and heat treatment.

The existing equipment and expertise also enable the production of very thin, micrometer-thick films made of hardmetals and ceramics. In their unsintered state, these films can be shaped or folded like paper and adapted to virtually any specified shape.

3D printed hardmetal components

By an increasingly sophisticated tool design the productivity of tools can be further improved and optimized. In traditional tool manufacturing, complex geometries, such as helical or meandering cooling channels inside the component or surfaces with undercuts, are still implemented at high costs or not realizable at all.

A process developed at Fraunhofer IKTS allows the 3D printing of complex hardmetal tools. The achieved components show a typical hardmetal structure comprising a density of one hundred percent and a homogeneous binder distribution. Comparing the materials characteristics, there are no differences between the 3D printed and conventionally produced high-performance hardmetal tools.
