Pilot production plant for SOEC electrolyzers nominated for Thuringian Innovation Award
Fraunhofer IKTS has been nominated for the Thuringian Innovation Award 2025 for its pilot production plant for SOEC electrolyzers, which was opened in May with its strategic partner thyssenkrupp nucera in Arnstadt. The jury of the renowned regional competition selected the project along with eleven other outstanding innovations that represent the Free State of Thuringia as an innovative technology location. In addition, an audience award will be presented, for which the public can vote until November 21.
With the pilot production plant in Arnstadt, Fraunhofer IKTS has built a crucial bridge between research and industrial application. The plant manufactures high-temperature electrolyzers based on solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) technology on an industrial scale. This technology enables particularly efficient conversion of electricity into hydrogen – a key component for the green hydrogen economy of the future and the decarbonization of energy-intensive industries.
“The nomination is a great endorsement of our research and development work in the field of hydrogen technologies. With the pilot production facility in Arnstadt, we are demonstrating how high technology from Thuringia can make a real contribution to the energy transition,” says Dr. Roland Weidl, deputy institute director of Fraunhofer IKTS and site manager in Arnstadt.
The award ceremony will take place on November 26, 2025, in Weimar. There, the winners in four categories will be honored with prize money totaling 110,000 euros.
Audience award: Every vote counts!
In addition to the jury awards, an audience award will also be presented this year. From November 3 to 21, 2025, interested parties can vote for their favorites online. Fraunhofer IKTS calls on all partners, supporters, and the public to vote for the SOEC pilot production facility in Arnstadt!
