Miniaturized, ceramic detectors for liquid and gas chromatography

Topic

Schematic illustration of the conventional flame ionization detector.

Decentralized measurement systems provide characteristics to fulfill the requirements of the Industry 4.0 and Internet of Things (IoT). Therefore, gas or liquid detectors get an increasing significance in the process, safety, energy and environmental monitoring technique. However, miniaturized but highly performant detectors with a minimized resources consumption are essential.

The Fraunhofer IKTS has established the ability to transfer complex detector principles in ceramic microsystems. Besides the reduction of e. g. size, weight and energy consumption, the usage of ceramic materials provides applications in harsh environments. For instance, the functional principle of a flame ionization detector was transferred in the ceramic multilayer technology (LTCC) during the research project “FIDEX” (# 13N13271), funded by the German Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung BMBF. The developed detectors enables among others the application in field devices due to the reduced combustion gas consumption in particular.
