Encapsulation materials have an influence on the reliability and lifetime of solar cells. Nowadays, lamination films like ethylenvinylacetate (EVA) and polyvinylbutyrale (PVB) are mostly used. Higher requirements in terms of cell structure and processing technology increase the demand for new encapsulation materials. Aside from standard films, new materials such as casting resins, potting materials and lacs have been focused on in the last years.

Within the framework of an internal study of Fraunhofer IKTS in 2010, more than 40 different encapsulation materials (films, potting materials and lacs) of 15 different product classes (20 renowned manufacturers) were tested as alternatives to EVA and PVB films. At Fraunhofer IKTS numerous measuring methods like climate chamber, electron microscopes, pull and shear tester are available for conducting long-term stability tests according to EN 61215 / EN 61646 as well as mechanical characterization.
