Study

Task

In the project “Analysis of the structure and location factors of the districts of Kelheim and Alzey-Worms,” Fraunhofer IKTS conducted a comparative study of the economic situation in these two regions. The aim was to identify the different framework conditions, economic structures, and development potential. The focus was particularly on the district of Kelheim, whose economic diversification and future viability shoould be strengthened. The aim was to identify key economic strengths and weaknesses in order to derive recommendations for action for various stakeholders such as local authorities, companies, and trade unions. The analysis was intended not only to present the current economic situation, but also to highlight future prospects in order to secure the long-term competitiveness of both districts.

Approach

The study followed a structured methodological approach that combined quantitative and qualitative elements. Comprehensive economic data was collected to assess the economic starting points of both districts. This was done by analyzing key figures on tax revenue, the labor market, industry structure, and demographic trends. Fraunhofer IKTS conducted qualitative analyses based on scientific literature, placing regional characteristics in a national context. A SWOT analysis was used to systematically evaluate internal strengths and weaknesses as well as external opportunities and risks. The results were compiled in a comprehensive report that not only highlighted the differences between the districts but also formulated specific areas for action and strategic recommendations for sustainable development.

Result

The analysis revealed significant differences between the districts of Kelheim and Alzey-Worms. While Alzey-Worms benefits from its proximity to Mainz and the pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies based there, Kelheim faces the challenge of making its industrial base fit for the future. Recommendations for action were developed to promote economic diversification, secure skilled labor, and expand new technologies such as hydrogen. The results show that Kelheim has potential in new technologies and digitalization despite its traditional industries. Its strategic location between major economic centers opens up additional opportunities to increase the attractiveness of the location and actively address the shortage of skilled workers. An integrative approach involving business, politics, and trade unions is crucial for the successful implementation of the recommended measures and the long-term development of the region.
