Testing electronics of the PCUS® pro device family.

Non-destructive testing (NDT) is a quality assurance tool that rapidly delivers reliable information on product quality or machine condition. By enabling early detection of defects, it can help to avoid weaknesses and damage.

As an NDT specialist, Fraunhofer IKTS in Dresden develops application-specific solutions for ultrasonic testing – from simple manual test systems to phased array systems for automated ultrasonic testing. The modular testing electronics can easily be adapted to specific test tasks. Thus, systems meeting all of the relevant parts of the ultrasonics standard DIN EN 12688 can be transferred reliably to industrial environments. For example, wheel set shafts with longitudinal holes and solid shaft test systems are among the numerous areas of application, which guarantee safety by testing highly stressed components in rail traffic.

The design of the PCUS® pro electronics enables the latest imaging techniques. With Full Matrix Caputre (FMC), phased array data can be collected and processed by Total Focussing Method (TFM), a signal processing algorithm, so that evaluations deliver much higher image resolutions than it would be possible with conventional sector scans.

The development work of the "Electronics for Testing Systems" group is concentrated on analog and digital systems for high-speed signal processing. For NDT test devices, such as those of the PCUS® pro series, analog circuits are developed, calculated, and simulated, microcontrollers and highly complex FPGAs programmed, and EMC-compliant board designs implemented in accordance with IPC. In digital signal processing, the group draws on its leading capabilities in FPGA design (Xilinx ISE and Vivado), PC interfaces, sequencers, memory interfaces, simulation of FPGA designs with Modelsim, and microcontroller/DSP programming.
