CO2-neutral oxygen generation for ozonation in wastewater treatment plants.
Fraunhofer IKTS is one of the leading research institutions in the field of material separation with ceramic materials. In the separation of oxygen – O2 – from air with mixed conducting ceramic membranes, only IKTS is able to realize membrane modules and pilot plants with technically relevant throughputs up to about 60 Nm³/h O2. Here, the modular device concept and the patented process control are designed for on-site production of O2 with minimal operating costs and CO2 emissions. The oxygen produced is highly pure, sterile and dry. The ceramic membranes are based on readily available, recyclable material.
The company poXos® (pure oXygen on site) is based on this technology and will establish itself in the market as a supplier of O2 generators for small and medium sized O2 consumers. Customers benefit from low O2 prices and CO2 emissions. In wastewater treatment by ozonation, poXos® offers a considerably simplified and also closed process cycle. In addition to the on-site generation of oxygen, it includes integrated destruction of the residual ozone and reuse of the off-gas. A reduction in operating costs of up to 60 % can be achieved. For the first time, this enables climate- and resource-friendly as well as CO2-neutral operation of the fourth treatment stage in wastewater treatment plants.
