Protective coatings on metal or lightweight components by thermal suspension spraying
Particle suspensions for thermal spraying are shown. They can be used to produce previously unattained layer qualities on large-area metal or lightweight components. The stable, thin layers between 10 and 50 μm have extremely low roughness of 1 μm. The usual post-processing of the layer surface is no longer necessary.
Protective coatings on ceramic fiber composites (CMC)
CMC have proven themselves in demanding applications such as brake discs or pump bearings. With Environmental Barrier Coatings (EBC), further applications of CMC can now be developed: The coating improves corrosion properties and thus extends service life, even in extremely hot environments, e.g. in gas turbines.
Ultra-thin barriers using CVD and ALD processes
Ultra-thin barrier layers and systems have been developed for hygroscopic and slightly oxidizing materials such as metal carbide powders for applications in tooling industry. By means of CVD and ALD processes, the coatings can be applied in the highest quality and thus ensure, for example, increased hardness with good fracture toughness of carbide at the same time.
Superhard diamond ceramic preforms
In contrast to commercial diamond materials, the new diamond ceramics jointly developed with partners at IKTS can be produced cost-effectively and in complex geometries using conventional ceramic technologies – as compact components or as 300 to 500 µm thick layers in highly stressed component areas. Maintenance-freedon of machines can thus be extended to well over 30 years.
