High-resolution multi-material printing for functional ceramic applications

Fraunhofer IKTS has many years of experience in the field of printed electronics. This includes the synthesis of ceramic and ceramic-compatible materials, their conversion into printable pastes and inks, the requirement-specific design of print layouts, and the implementation of electronic components using various printing processes such as screen and stencil printing, dispensing and dispense jetting, aerosol jet and inkjet printing – also in combination. This offers special technological possibilities for the production of multilayer, hybrid components. With integrated inline drying or sintering technologies (NIR, UV and photonics) and various characterization facilities functional materials can be deposited with high precision and fully cured after each printing process.

    Printed electronics for highest frequencies

The substantial progress recently made in semiconductor technology allows increasing application scenarios in automotive (e.g. radar sensors), industry 4.0 (e.g. level sensors) or communication technology (e.g. 6G components). Adapted substrate and circuit technologies are need for fully drawing on the potential of this semiconductors. Fraunhofer IKTS offers a unique portfolio in technical solutions for these components. Ceramic multilayers can be used to overcome reliability issues and performance losses of standard polymer substrates. Especially the thermomechanical match between ceramics and novel semiconductors, and the possibility to produce fully hermetical housings achieve higher reliability of the complete module. Loss characteristics can be further improved by using novel photoimageable thick-film pastes. This combination of thin- and thick-film technology can decrease line widths and distance down to below 20 microns under series production conditions.

HeartBeat – Inkjet-printed platform on polymer foil for the functional monitoring of cardiomyocyte cells

An inkjet-printed electrode platform on polymer foil demonstrates the optical and electrophysiological monitoring of autonomously contracting cardiac cells. This enables a multifactorial monitoring of stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes and can provide new insights for drug development, toxicological screenings, and biosensor product developments. Join our talk on Thursday to get insights!
