JEC World International Composites Event

The Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems IKTS demonstrates systems for the optimization of CFRP components by ceramic coatings and the testing of CFRP materials with eddy current at the joint booth of the Saxony Economic Development Corporation.

Non-destructive testing system EddyCus®

Carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) and non-crimp fabrics can be tested rapidly and process near with eddy-current based methods, which utilize the electrical properties of the carbon fibers for quality assurance. EddyCus® systems developed by Fraunhofer IKTS are suitable for non-destructive testing along the complete process chain, from inline measurement of the raw carbon fiber textile to the production of complete assemblies made of CFRP with robot based 3D eddy-current inspection.

 

Optimizing CFRP components by plasma spraying

Components made of CFRP, such as sleeves, panels and moldings, have a high strength-to-weight ratio and a high rigidity – but they are less resistant to chemical and tribological stress. Ceramic coatings can significantly improve the surface resistance of CFRP components, e.g. regarding wear protection, thermal or electrical insulation. For example, ceramic layers prepared by atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) extend the endurance and abrasion resistance of components to a factor of 2 to 100.
