The Fraunhofer IKTS presents the EddyCus® MPECS mini system for non-destructive testing and freeform components of ceramic matrix composites for high-temperature and safety-relevant applications at the joint booth of the Saxony Economic Development Corporation.

Non-destructive testing system EddyCus® MPECS mini

Carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) and non-crimp fabrics can be tested rapidly and process near with eddy-current based methods, which utilize the electrical properties of the carbon fibers for quality assurance. EddyCus® systems developed by Fraunhofer IKTS are suitable for non-destructive testings along the complete process chain, from the raw carbon fiber material to the production of complete assemblies made of CFRP.

 

Ceramic matrix composites for highest demands

Ceramic matrix composites (CMC) are composites of ceramic fibers surrounded by a ceramic matrix. By means of winding technology, weaving, or lamination of fiber layers, individual components can be manufactured. An even damage tolerance, quasi-ductility and high-temperature properties enable the use of CMC components in safety-relevant applications, such as aircraft turbines, as thermowells in foundry technology or charging stands for the heat treatment of steel and other metals.

 

Optimizing CFRP and CMC components by plasma spraying

Ceramic coatings can significantly improve the surface resistance of CFRP and CMC components, e.g. regarding wear protection, thermal or electrical insulation. For example, ceramic layers prepared by atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) extend the endurance and abrasion resistance of components to a factor of 2 to 100.
