The Bright World of Metals – GIFA, METEC, THERMPROCESS und NEWCAST

Around 78,000 visitors and 2,200 exhibitors from all over the world make Düsseldorf the world capital for “The Bright World of Metals” once again. We are represented at GIFA with ceramic foundry solutions. Ceramic high-performance materials have exceptional resistance to high temperatures, wear and corrosion. This makes them ideal for a wide range of applications in foundry technology.

Melt-metal filter made of cellular ceramics

Fraunhofer IKTS develops formulations based on silicon carbide, aluminum oxide and zirconium oxide as well as manufacturing and measuring methods for melt-metal filters. Specialized application laboratories are available for this purpose, in which cellular ceramics can be coated and characterized on a research and development scale and prototypes and smaller series can be realized.

Porous ceramic inserts for highly stressed light metal and grey cast iron components

With the aid of porous ceramic inserts, so-called preforms, cast components made of light metal and iron-based alloys can be locally reinforced in areas subject to high thermal and mechanical stress. We develop and manufacture preforms from particle-sintered ceramics and foam ceramics. A wide range of ceramic materials is available, which can be selected and further developed depending on the application.

Gas-permeable ceramics for stabilizing plant components

A further focus is on gas-permeable ceramics, with the help of which gases and thus overpressures can be dissipated at functionally decisive components such as guide or deflection pulleys. Thus, the ceramics can be used as an active safety device to avoid strong pressure increases, deformations or even bursting. In addition, the gas-permeable ceramics can also be used for uniform gassing of melts with microscopically small gas bubbles.
