ees is Europe's largest and most international trade fair for batteries and energy storage systems. Under the motto “Innovating Energy Storage”, manufacturers, dealers, project developers, system integrators, professional users and suppliers of innovative battery technologies as well as future-oriented solutions for the storage of renewable energies such as green hydrogen or power-to-gas applications gather in Munich every year.

Fraunhofer IKTS provides innovative components, modules and complete energy technology systems, developed, built and tested on the basis of ceramic materials and technologies. Its applications include energy storage and fuel cell systems, solar cells, energy harvesting modules and thermal energy systems, even solutions for bioenergetic and chemical energy sources.

Successfully transforming our energy supply system to make it sustainable is one of the most important tasks facing us in the 21st century. This task requires that we use renewable and conventional energy sources as efficiently as possible while minimizing resulting damaging effects.

Hydrogen technologies for decarbonization

Hydrogen will be the fourth pillar of the energy transition. The upcoming market ramp-up requires innovative materials, market-oriented components and smart technology development. Fraunhofer IKTS is focusing on all three areas at its Arnstadt site. At Electrical Energy Storage Europe, we will show components for electrochemical energy converters and concepts for electrolysis stacks. In addition, the WaTTh infrastructure project will be presented, in which the basis for scaling hydrogen technologies from Industry 4.0 to heat generation will be established.

Ceramic battery für stationary energy storage

cerenergy^® is the Fraunhofer IKTS technology platform for ceramic-based high-temperature batteries. The idea is based on the “redevelopment” of Na/NiCl₂ and Na/S batteries with the proviso that cells and systems are produced as cost-efficient as possible. For this purpose, cell and system design, used materials and production technologies are considered. The targeted costs are noticeably below 100 €/kWh on cell level. After more than ten years of development at Fraunhofer IKTS, the commercialization of the ceramic battery cerenergy^® is now beginning. A key milestone on this path was reached with the founding of Altech Batteries GmbH in September 2022, in which Altech Energy Holding holds a 75 % stake and the Fraunhofer- Gesellschaft a 25 % stake. The aim of Altech Batteries GmbH is to set up a production line for the solid-state battery cerenergy^®.
