The Center was created by Fraunhofer USA, Inc., the Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems IKTS, the State of Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection DEEP, and the University of Connecticut. Upon its founding in 2013, Fraunhofer CEI became the seventh Fraunhofer USA research center. Each Fraunhofer research center is partnered with a research university in the U.S. and also with a Fraunhofer Institute in Germany.
The mission of the Fraunhofer Center for Energy Innovation CEI at the University of Connecticut is to develop advanced technologies related to energy storage, fuel cells, in-stream hydro, power management and distribution through contract research.
Fraunhofer CEI researchers – comprising faculty from the University of Connecticut, Fraunhofer and allied research organizations – together with industry partners, focus on research, development and commercialization efforts in four core areas:
In all these areas, the partners have comprehensive expertise, from raw materials to testing under realistic conditions. Fraunhofer CEI offers solutions for small jobs as well as the complete product development for our customers.
